CIA objects to covers; UK publication delayed until June 2006
My former employer, the CIA, has objected to Penguin's use of the CIA
seal on the new UK covers of the first four Rain books (if you want
to see the offending covers, I'll keep them here until the new covers are ready or
until the CIA tells me to take them down from my website, whichever
comes first).
Consequently, Penguin has decided to create new covers, and the UK
publication of the fourth book (One Last Kill in the UK; Killing Rain
in the US) and the UK reissue of the first three has been delayed
until June. The good news is, I've seen a prototype of the
redesigned new covers, and they're so fantastic that I think the
delay might have been worth it. Also, the agency's attention to my
books and its unusual objection has created a lot of interest among
UK, Australian, and New Zealand booksellers, who had to take the
unusual step of returning their shipments to Penguin in February when
the CIA weighed in. Certainly not the first time there have been
unintended consequences to CIA action... this time, I'm glad to say,
favorable ones for me.
BTW, if you were lucky enough to score one of the recalled books
before they were destroyed, it will probably be a collector's item.
Just don't let the agency catch you with it...

Killing Rain is one of January Magazine's "Best of 2005"
The reviewer, Jennifer Jordan, states: "Killing Rain is suspenseful, brimming with tight turns of plot and exotically backdropped. It's an achievement born of taut writing and a profound character. What more could you want out of a thriller?" To read more, click here.
